History of Macroom Town Hall
In 1898, the newly appointed Town Commissioners decided to erect a Town Hall in a central location and steps were taken to acquire the site of the old Market House from Lady Ardilaun, who was the owner of the property and resided in Macroom Castle. The negotiations for the sale, in which Very Rev. Canon Murphy, P.P. interested himself, were successful.
On 28th June 1899, Mr. A.W. Bernard, C.E. submitted plans for the Town Hall. They were sent on to Lady Ardilaun for her approval.
In June 1900, an application was made to the Local Government Body for sanction of a loan of £1,000 for the erection of the proposed Town Hall. It appears that sanction was not obtained until March 1902 and tenders were then invited for the contract.
Mr. Wm. Murphy, U.D.C. had a clause inserted in the contract requiring the contractor to employ all local labour and to have all the timberwork and joinery made in Macroom by skilled tradesmen.
The contract had to be advertised on several occasions because all the tenders submitted were far in excess of the estimate. Eventually, the tender of Messrs. Buckley Bros., Ovens, at £1,320, was accepted. Work on the Town Hall was completed late in 1904.
